As WIPA, WICB come to agreement
By Sean Devers
The bitter contractual dispute between WIPA and WICB seems to be finally coming to an end with both parties agreeing on all but two issues.
This news, in a joint release to the media from the two bodies, is good news for cricket fans in the region who suffered the embarrassment of seeing a hastily arranged makeshift team being beaten in every Test and ODI match of the last home series against minnows Bangladesh.
The substandard Floyd Reifer-led side predictably crashed out of the Champions Trophy ‘Mini World Cup’ in South Africa after being the only side in the 8-team competition to lose all of their games.
Many, including Cricket Australia, were worried that the 2nd string side would be sent to Australia year-end and there was speculation that the tour could have been aborted because of that.
The WICB has mandated that for players to be eligible for the Australia tour, they must participate in the Regional One-Day series which commences in Guyana on October 28.
The entire West Indies team, which included Skipper Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, withdrew their services days before the first Test against Bangladesh in July.
This caused the selectors to call up Jamaican Andrew Creary and Bajan Kraigg Braithwaite from the Regional Under-19 series in Jamaica as they scrambled for a team after several other players in the region, including Guyanese Test left-handers Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon and the entire Trinidad and Tobago team, joined the strike in solidarity with the ‘senior’ players.
After a meeting with Guyana’s President and Chairman of CARICOM Barath Jagdeo and Sir Shridath Ramphal, the senior players made them selves available for the South Africa tour but were not selected.
The full text of the joint media statement read:-“WIPA and WICB have announced that all outstanding matters in dispute between the two bodies have been settled amicably. Resolution of the matters in dispute was reached after a three day meeting between Dr. Julian Hunte and Mr. Dinanath Ramnarine.
Only two outstanding matters – the issue regarding the India 2009 Tour and the issue of ‘Team Rights’ – will be referred to a special arbitration process as set out in the recommendations of the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub Committee on Cricket given on the 11th September 2009 and agreed to by the WICB and WIPA.
In addition, the WICB and the WIPA agreed to commence negotiations on or before October 15th 2009 with respect to a new long term MOU/CBA agreement between the parties, with a commitment towards its finalization by December 31st 2009, at the latest.
Both parties are pleased that the Agreement reached creates an environment to engage in building a genuine partnership that can ensure the long term development and progress of West Indies cricket”.
