Dear Editor,
It is indeed fascinating to see the PPP’s various spin artists weave their craft to justify and promote the PPP’s “success” over the years.
They are not lying because in their opinion this is how they feel and they are entitled to feel proud even though NIS was bankrupted to bankroll Mr. Jagdeo’s promise of a bridge on the Berbice River.
The cost of the bridge is not what is important, nor the fact that the average commuter cannot use it regularly, but the fact that we yell to the clouds about the great bridge and the lights as how the PPP wants us to measure their achievements.
The truth is that there is much darkness all over Guyana and I do not mean the figurative darkness, but rather the real darkness due to lack of electricity.
These spin artists fail to point out that the PPP has squandered 17 years and failed to resolve this and many other issues.
The PPP is so obsessed with the media that they insist on owning and maintaining Burnham’s control of the media apparatus in Guyana by the government. They spend millions of dollars to keep all state owned media assets operating every year.
Just imagine if we had used those dollars to curb crime or if we had used those dollars to fund cheaper, more reliable alternative energy sources to the engines (even the new ones) that GPL uses?
The hypocrisy is absolutely chilling. Prior to 1992 the PPP condemned state owned media and when GINA was created, the PPP were the greatest opponents of this new venture by the PNC government.
Now they seem to have a change of heart – I do not buy it. If it was not good then it still isn’t good now regardless of the puppeteer.
The PPP’s obsession with the media comes directly from the top. President Jagdeo is so obsessed with the media and controlling how they portray him and his government that he has banned one reporter, yanked the licence of a TV station and has labelled the media as the “new opposition”.
Dr. Jagan said “We need the help of our media to take our country and every one of our citizens along”.
If Mr. Jagdeo were to have it his way he would probably get rid of every independent media entity that was not pro PPP.
The President ought to embrace the media and fix the issues the media expose as problems within his government and then he will not only garner praise from his spin artists, but from where it counts – the citizens of this country.
The time has come for the Citizens of Guyana to tell its government we do not want you to control all media and we do not want you to control what we eat, think, hear, see and say. Free thought is the key to any vibrant democracy.
Mr. Jagdeo must shed his communist tendencies and embrace democratic norms for Guyana to move forward. Get your priorities in order Mr. Jagdeo.
