A ship yard foreman is counting his blessings after he survived being run over by a truck yesterday.
Shawn Baker, 30, of Mocha, East Bank Demerara, was at the time directing traffic in the Muneshwer’s Shipping yard on Water Street.
According to his colleagues who were at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital where Baker is now a patient, the man was directing a trailer truck that had gone to that wharf to collect a container.
One of them said that Baker was standing behind the truck directing it, as it was reversing into position to collect the cargo. The man is unsure how Baker found himself under its wheels.
The concerned colleague said that he heard another employee yelling in panic and realised that something was wrong. The man recalled that the driver heard the calls of the men in the shipyard and stopped, not realising that he had pinned Baker.
The colleague said the truck that belongs to John Fernandes Limited had to then drive off Baker’s body to release him.
Another of Baker’s workmates said the worksite was plunged into a state of panic as they rushed to take him to the hospital.
The men who transported Baker to the medical institution were so confused that they initially took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital instead of the St Joseph Mercy Hospital where they were instructed to take him by John Fernandes Limited, which will be paying the hospital expenses.
Baker’s colleagues said he was in severe pain but was conscious all the time. According to another of the many workmates gathered at the hospital, Baker is lucky to be alive because of the awareness he showed even in adversity. “If he didn’t pull he head aside dah truck woulda crush he head”, the truck only managed to run over the left side of his body.
Additionally, the man said had the truck been loaded it would have been a different story. “If dah truck had on that container it woulda kill he”.
The man who has been employed with Muneshwer’s Shipping services for the past year was in a stable condition at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital up to press time, although the extent of Baker’s injuries were undetermined. (Brushell Blackman)
