French Guiana & Netherlands Antilles also invited
Guyana’s senior football team ‘Golden Jaguars’ have been invited to play in a special tournament to mark Suriname’s Independence celebrations from October 28 to November 1, 2009.
Kaieteur Sport understands that a 24-man team has already been shortlisted and is expected to commence training early next week ahead of the tournament.
Teams from French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles have also been invited to compete in what is anticipated to be a keenly contested four-nation tournament.
It is not sure if players competing in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League will be invited to compete for places in the touring team since the local based players have been very active in the past few months, especially in Georgetown.
With the commencement of the Guyana Football Federation Super League six weeks ago, the selection panel of the GFF would have had more players to look at.
Howard Lowe, who captains Alpha United, the Four-Time Premier League champions in the city is expected to retain the Captains’ armband for this competition.
A new coach is expected to be named since Paul James, who was at the helm when Guyana played in the Parbo Bier Cup last June, has migrated to the Bahamas. The ‘Golden Jaguars’ had lost all three games at the Parbo Bier Cup to Suriname, French Guiana and Antigua & Barbuda.
