Diamond sugar strike…
On Thursday last, workers at the Diamond GuySuCo plant, downed tools, claiming that they were not satisfied with the monies they were receiving for clearing beds at the location.
According to General Secretary of Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Seepaul Narine, following the strike, a team from the union and GuySuCo visited the fields and they had agreed to review the pricing system.
As it was, workers were paid between $360 and $1160 for clearing sugarcane beds from weeds and other obstacles. Following the review, the company as of Saturday is offering between $400 and $1200.
However, the workers have indicated to union representatives that they are not willing to accept the new pricing.
Narine said that since the workers have indicated that they will not be accepting the new prices, the union will have to further meet with GuySuCo for possible further negotiations. He noted that the workers have not communicated with the union whether or not they intend to continue with their strike actions until their demands are met.
Meanwhile, as it relates to the transfer of workers from the Diamond Plantation to the LBI estate, Narine said the matter is still being looked at by GAWU, NAACIE as well as the sugar company.
The union official said a committee has been set up to address the issues which were raised by the workers of Diamond.
The workers had taken industrial action after they said that they were transferred to the LBI Sugar Estate without “proper arrangements”.
The workers had expressed concerns that it was not economical for them to travel from the East Bank of Demerara to the East Coast of Demerara to work under their current wages.
In addition, the workers were asking the sugar company to look into severance packages for them. The unions had indicated that options were being explored and the workers were told to return to Diamond in the meantime.
Workers were transferred to LBI since the Diamond Plantation is scheduled to be closed shortly.
