…gearing to produce biomass for eco-friendly electricity
Wood farmed in Guyana will now be used in the United States of America to produce cleaner and cheaper electricity.
This was announced recently by the Clenergen Corporation which stated that it has leased some 5,000 acres of land in Guyana, with an option for the lease rights to an additional 145,000 acres for the cultivation of biomass, which the American company plans on using for electricity generation.
The land according to the Clenergen Corporation will be used to cultivate fast growing micro-propagated elite strains of Paulownia for producing wood chips (biomass), which will be exported to generate clean electricity in the USA and Europe.
Paulownia is popular in its native China for reforestation, roadside planting and as an ornamental tree.
It grows well in a wide variety of soil types, notably poor ones, but needs a lot of light and does not bode well with a high water table.
Chief Executive Officer of Clenergen Corporation, Mark Quinn, is on record as saying, “the land cultivation is due to commence with cultivation specialists Georgia Caribbean International (GCI) in 2010.”
On a conservative estimate of 40 tonnes of biomass per acre, the company projects an annual supply of six million tonnes by 2016.
It was pointed out that with the overwhelming demand for coal fired power plants to blend, biomass to reduce carbon emissions, Clenergen intends to be a global supplier of high calorific wood chips for gasification and clean energy generation, particularly in Europe and the USA.
“GSI has experience with this specie of tree since 1999 and is recognised as a world leader in Paulownia plantation,” according to Quinn.
An estimated 9000 tonnes of Ammonium Sulphate Fertiliser is expected to be produced when operations commence; which should be by next month.
