It was all another keen and hyped up contest that ended with Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay powering past old rival Alonzo Greaves to win the feature 15-lap contest at the Third Annual Maxie Pereira and Marlis Archer Memorial Cycle Meet organised by the Continental Cycle Club (CCC) and held on the outer circuit of the National Park.
The feature match-up which attracted a total of 32 starters saw the lead changing saddles almost for every lap as the riders sought to cash in on the $1,000 that was at stake since every lap attracted a prime prize. Mc Kay powered past Greaves and Lear Nunes with under 150metres to the finish line to win in 1 hour 29 minutes 52 seconds.
Geron Williams rode well to take the fourth spot with Robin Persaud and Alex Mendes, fifth and sixth, respectively. Mc Kay took 6 of the primes, Persaud 4, Greaves and Williams 2 each and Eric Sankar who looked promising in the early stages of the race claiming one.
BMX sensation Raymond Perez Jnr. continued his dominance at this level with victories in both the 6-9 and 9-12 races. He finished ahead of Crystal Blackman and Dineshwar Ragubeer in the 6-9 event while easing comfortably to victory in the 9-12 contest ahead of Darius Ramsammy and Christopher Griffith.
Robin Persaud, who took top honours in the feature race of the 7th Hand in Hand 11-race meet on Saturday, had stormed to victory in the second event of yesterday’s meet, the category 1, 2, 3 & 4 showdown. Persaud won the 8-lap race ahead of Eric Sankar, Tony Simon, Raymond Newton and Jamal Nichols in that order.
Geron Williams won the first race of the day, the juvenile/junior 5-lap match up; Christopher Persaud took the second place with Christopher Holder and Enzo Matthews 3rd and 4th.
The veterans under-50 clash saw Raymond Newton crossing the finish line before Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson and Andrew Spencer while the over-50 showdown saw USA based Randy Toussaint beating by some distance, Robert Beaton and Compton Persaud in that order. Both veteran races were 3-laps duels.
The top upright rider over two laps was Richard Charles who was followed to the line by Keon Thomas and Kester Croal. Topping the field in the BMX 12-14 event was Brandon Baker followed by Ravindra Rodrigues and Mark Harris, while Marcia Dick was again in winner’s row over Naiomi Singh in the lone female match up.
At the presentation ceremony, Khemraj Ramjattan, representing the Alliance For Change under whose auspices the event is held to remember Maxie Pereira and Marlis Archer, former members of the AFC who also held prominent Executive positions with the CCC, said they will continue to hold this event in memory of the two former stalwarts.
Ramjattan also commended the cyclists, officials and spectators for coming out in their numbers to make the day an entertaining and successful one. He promised that they will continue to work with the CCC to ensure that the meet grows from strength to strength.
CCC President Ms. Cheryl Sampson, who chaired the proceedings, complimented all the participants and promised that they will seek in the future to attract riders from the region since it’s their intention to work towards the event taking on an international flavour.
