Cheddi came to me in my dreams. He said, “Peeping Tom, I need you to speak out against what is taking place in government.”

I said, “Why? What about the leaders of your party? Scotch tape on their mouth?”

“That is one of the things I want you to speak out against. Dem old boys in the party allowing dem little boys to do as they please! You need to tell them not to allow dem little boys to take over things.”

“But Cheddi,” I replied, “it was you and Granny who pushed these little boys.”

“Peeper, you have to have a dialectic and world perspective of the situation. We need to give some encouragement to youth but we would not have surrendered the future of the party into the hands of these young turks,” said Cheddi.

“Well, lil boys running things now… and they running things into the ground,” I replied.

“That is why I need you to tell them old boys to not allow the party to be hijacked for succession purposes. There are pressing national needs and the older heads need to provide leadership rather than allow dem lil boys to run roughshod over dem,” said Cheddi.

“Well, it look as if dem lil boys already have things under control. They are slowly strangling the party and ensuring that they bring more number of leaders under their wing through state patronage. By the time they are finished, they would have had control of the executive of the party and there is nothing that is going to stop them from removing any opposition to their domination.”

“You think so Peeper? Are you serious that the lil boys are wooing leaders of the party to their side so as to gain total control of the party machinery?”

“I don’t think so, I know so,” I replied.

“Well, that is all the more reason Peeper why you must speak out against what is going on because if dem lil boys take control of the party, then everything that we have worked for will be undermined.”

“What can I do Peeper? I am long gone, and Granny joined me just a short time ago. I was hoping dem old boys would have carried on the work but it looks from what you are telling me that dem lil boys already have control and are trying to win over greater support. But how are they doing this?”

“Well, they are using carrot and stick methods,” I said.

“Carrot and stick?” asked Cheddi.

“Yes, carrot and stick, Cheddi. Some of the old boys getting wuk and other getting pension. Dem even offering jobs to dem old boys picknee so dem old boys have to keep dem mouth shut.”

“That is why you have to speak out for me, Peeper. You are my only hope to get through to dem old boy who I still have faith in,” said Cheddi.

“Only because is you Cheddi that I will oblige. What you want me to say?”

“I concerned about this land sale in Block Y Golden Grove. I want you to ask dem old heads to stop this deal from going through because it is not in keeping with the working class nature of my party.”

“What sale?” I queried.

“The Ministry of Housing and Water is offering for sale thirty five acres of land at Block Y Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.”

“So what is wrong with that?” I asked.

“What is wrong with that? A lot is wrong with that. When I restarted the housing drive it was to allow the working class people to own their own homes. Now, the Ministry of Housing selling thirty five acres to some private individual, something that will only lead to a high income scheme being established, this same land could have been developed for thirty five homes for poor people. You need to speak to dem old boys, Peeper, and have them ask why government land is being sold to private developers when there are still thousands of poor Guyanese who need housing. This sale will only put more money in the hands of the rich,” pleaded Cheddi.

“Ok, I get you point. You want me to tell dem old boys to object to this sale and to ask dem to have these lands given to the long list of persons waiting for house lots?”

“Now you get the point, Peeper,” said Cheddi.

“But who you think should lead the party?” I asked. Before he could answer I woke up.
