Seawall and Topp XX draw
By Franklin Wilson
Four wins and a draw were the results recorded on day six of the Guyana Football Federation National Super League played at four venues around the country.
Leaders Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United consolidated their position at the top with a sound beating of home team Liquid Gold, 6-0 at the Bartica Community Centre ground yesterday afternoon. Engineering the big win for Alpha was Dwayne Jacobs who blasted a hat-trick, defender Anthony Harding has continued his fine goal scoring form with a double while the other goal came off the boot of the nagging Andrew Murray.
Jacobs was on target in the 58th, 81st and 89th minute, Harding found the nets in the 38th and 71st while Murray opened the scoring in the 30th minute of play. Alpha now moves to 14 points and still is the only unbeaten team in the one round league.
Up at the Enmore Community Centre ground, Sunburst Camptown defeated Victoria Kings in the feature game of the only double header on the day. The opening game saw the Guyana Defence Force squeezing past Buxton United, 1-0, Marlon Benjamin banging his shot past Buxton’s goalie Brian Robinson in the 37th minute.
The feature game saw Camptown dominating their opponents but the Campbellville boys were very unproductive with their goal scoring chances, missing at least seven clear cut chances during the 90 minutes of play in drenching rain, Nigel Codrington and Telson McKinnon, the main culprits.
McKinnon it was who pushed them into the lead in only the 3rd minute, chesting the ball and turning between two defenders skillfully before placing the ball past the Victoria Kings keeper to the far post. Thereafter, many opportunities were created but Codrington and McKinnon failed to put the ball away even with an open goal on one occasion.
The advantage was doubled for Camptown in the 30th minute when defender Kester Alleyne headed home from a corner.
Kings engineered some promising runs of their own and were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute. Donald Lutchman stepped up to take the shot but was saved by Camptown’s custodian Richie Richards. Even the rebound taken by the Kings went wide of the upright.
Victoria, were able to pull one back four minutes into the second half from a well taken free kick by Kwesi De Souza. His shot beat Richards from 30 yards out. The game was but beyond the Kings when substitute Delon Johnson showed his teammates how it is done with a fine finish in the first minute of added on time.
Up at the Blairmont ground on the West Coast of Berbice, the home team, Rosignol United were upstaged by visitors Milerock, 2-1.
Jermaine Mc Bean netted both goals for the Linden side in the 13th and 32nd minute. Rosignol got their consolation goal from Gladwin Johnson.
And over at the Uitvlugt ground on the West Coast of Demerara, Bakewell Topp XX and Seawall played to a 1-1 draw.
