West Indies Coach and designated Technical Director (TD) of the Guyana National Rugby Team Joe Whipple, who is spearheading preparations of the local squad currently preparing for the North American & Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Championships scheduled to be staged in Mexico from November 14-15 told Kaieteur Sport that he is pleased with what he has seen so far.
Whipple, who arrived in the country on Friday and leaves on Monday speaking with this newspaper disclosed that preparations are moving along nicely and rated the fitness of the players at around 70% which according to him is a desired level at this stage.
“The players are all working hard and I’m pleased with the programme and I feel that they will be in pretty good shape by the time they get to Mexico,” Whipple pointed out to Kaieteur Sport.
He added that as time goes along their level of fitness will get to 100%, while the skills level will also improve.
“We are seeing a bit of skills improvement at this stage and I’m confident that by the time we are ready to depart, that will improve tremendously,” the TD expressed.
Commenting on the team, Whipple said that they are fine in terms of fitness, but cautioned that there will be a few niggling injuries which is expected.
Twelve players from both the Men’s and Women’s squads will make the final composition of the teams, but Whipple indicated that because of the need to have a prolonged programme for further development, the Guyana Rugby Football Union have been attempting to expose as much players as possible with the aim of keeping a consistent core of players prepared at a high level.
“We are a hard working unit and that is why we are trying to expose as much players as possible and that is why I’m here as well,” Whipple added.
He spoke of their commitment and noted that what is needed right now is for the teams’ management to work consistently on the positives because according to him focusing on the negatives will get them nowhere.
“We need not worry on the negatives since it will take us nowhere, we executed a nice little phase play and that is what we need to be consistent on as much as possible,” the vastly experienced Head Coach stated.
He revealed that his goal is to win in Mexico and when they’ve achieved that further discussions on his future role in the team will be re-assessed.
Whipple has also been imparting some amount of knowledge to local coaches Laurie Adonis and Clinton Clarke with the aim of them continuing the programme for preparations set up by him.
Whipple, who departs tomorrow, will be here for an extended time on his return.
Meanwhile, the two squads in training held game simulations yesterday at the National Park.
