The French Government established the first postal service in British Guiana in 1783 with Adrian Loncq as the first Post Master for Demerara.
However, after the colonies were taken over by the Dutch, the Post Office was abolished and remained non existent between 1784 and 1795. During this period, mail was sent through the government office.
The first Post Office was established in 1793 under the control of Attorney at law J.C. De La Coste. On April 1, 1877, British Guiana entered the Postal Union.
According to Philatelic Manager, Telisha Beresford, Michael Jackson and National Basketball Association (NBA) teams, Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magics, stamps were launched at the Lamaha and Carmichael Streets.
Others were launched weeks ago, among them, stamps featuring the Takutu Bridge and the Cauliflower. Students from various schools came out to view the stamps that depict Guyana’s history and culture.
According to the Marketing Manager of the General Post Office (GPO) Hansraj Manbodh, the “Cotton Reel” was the first ever valued stamp in the first denomination that appeared on July 1, 1850, along with Guyana’s rare and famous; the Black on Magneta stamp of which there are only three in existence. Replicas are on display.
One day has been set aside annually in recognition of the postal entity.
“We have been focusing on ways in which to improve our services constantly especially since the commencement of the e-Mail. We have diversified our services and have sublet sections of our buildings, especially to the Government agencies where NIS, IPED, Courts and other various bills can be paid,” Manbodh said.
He further said that 65 agencies are within the network. Fifty are post offices and the others would be agents. The post office has been handling large sums of cash, sometimes even more than the banks.
“We have the cheapest rates and are upgrading our systems, technology wise, in another year our system would be fully computerised.”
Services are also offered by a Justice of Peace who is located at the GPO to the general public.
Books and monetary donations were made to St Roses High School along with the feeding of three charitable homes in the three counties while tokens and snacks were given to customers at the various Post Offices during the observance of World Postal Day.
“On October 25, at the Guyana National Service Ground, members would be invited to a day of sports where the organisation would honour staff and make presentations to them.”
Hansraj, on the topic of the security, said, “In the Postal Services, especially where narcotic trafficking is concerned, we register all the necessary information of persons who send packages, and stringent measures have been taken to apprehend culprits of such activities.
The airline service which has declined, has caused many problems for the delivery of mail.
“There is also no guarantee for the safety of mail; other countries are also trying to improve their systems.
“We included Customs Anti Narcotic Unit to advise us on dealing with measures to put in place.”
