Thomas stun Conquerors, Flamingo upstage Uprising, Camptown & Santos also advance
By Franklin Wilson
In sweltering heat at the Tucville ground yesterday morning into early afternoon, the heat on the pitch was equally hot but too much for former defending Chubby Under-13 champions Uprising and Fruta Conquerors to handle.
Both sides were stunned in their respective quarter-final matches of the 2009 competition in contrasting fashion by Flamingo and Thomas United with the latter two booking their places in the semi-finals which is set for Wednesday evening at the same venue.
Also advancing to the final four but with much more ease were Sunburst Camptown who hammered Alpha United 4-1 and Santos, who squeezed past Georgetown Football Club by the odd goal in three.
The final two games of the day produced intense rivalry between the sides in sweltering heat which did affect the energy levels of the youngsters.
Flamingo showed great resolve and determination in stunning Uprising 3-2 coming from behind. The former champs took an early and comfortable 2-0 lead following goals from Steffon Walton in the 29th minute and Nyron Joseph in the 40th.
Even though they were trailing, Flamingo did not bury their heads in the sand but continued to take the fight to their opponents. Their constant raids finally took its toll on Uprising who lost focus in a critical juncture of the game, the final ten minutes.
Flamingo showed that they were better and the more focused team on the final bend as they banged in three goals to record a memorable victory. Alpha Mc Phoy narrowed the lead in the 50th minute, five minutes later, Orland Ricketts leveled the scores and with two minutes to full time, the stunner rocked the nets compliments of Colin Waterman who celebrated with a double back summersault.
In another stunning result, home team and pre game favourite Fruta Conquerors were caged and disposed of by a confident and focused Thomas United side.
The contest was even for the most part with neither of teams giving up much turf in the attacking third, the forwards on either side of the divide found it difficult to penetrate owing to some excellent work by the defenders from both teams.
But Thomas it was, who kept their composure and in the final minute (60) of the contest found a slight opening which they capitalized on with glee, Michael Bowan rocking the nets to seal his side’s win and a place in the semi-finals.
Santos eased to a 2-1 over GFC, Orin Yarde (18) and Jerome Liddell (23) scored for the winners with GFC’s consolation strike touched in by Ray Stanton in the 38th minute.
Sunburst Camptown stormed back after being down 1-0, to hammer Alpha United 4-1. Keron Solomon had given Alpha the lead five minutes in to the game, an advantage they enjoyed until the 32nd minute when the ever hunting Azumah Small stood tall after receiving the ball in Alpha’s half, dribbled two defenders before unleashing a powerful left foot shot to the far post (left of keeper) to neutralize Alpha’s advantage.
One minute later, Jason ‘Channaman’ Williams gave Camptown the lead, Christopher Clarke in the 45th and Lazon Lord in the 54th, banging in goals to hand Camptown the win, 4-1.
The semi-finals, which will be played on Wednesday evening at the Tucville ground, will see Thomas United opposing Camptown and Santos tackling Flamingo. Kick off time is 17:00hrs.
