Approximately 200 million doses of H1N1 vaccine will be made available to the Caribbean, thanks to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the Revolving Fund.
This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who on many occasions had made it clear that if the Region did not get the assistance of these two organisations, then the H1N1 vaccine would not have been sent to the Caribbean, and be utilised by the developed countries.
Dr. Ramsammy hopes that no child from the Region would die from H1N1.
“Already the vaccines that have been available, have been procured, purchased and stockpiled for use in the developed countries, but because PAHO/WHO have been working and there are Ministers who speak up, PAHO and the Revolving Fund have been able to ensure that in a short while, we would receive approximately 200 million doses of the H1N1 for use in the Caribbean,” Minister Ramsammy said.
The Health Minister took note that the five manufacturers of the vaccine are all from the developed countries and as such the possibility highly exists that there would not be equitable distribution.
“That is why we must speak up! Had we not spoken up and had we not have the solidarity that we share with PAHO, those 200 million vaccines would not have been available.”
Through Guyana’s negotiation through PAHO and the Revolving Fund, the average price that is being offered by the five manufacturers for the procurement of the vaccine is now US$7.
Dr. Ramsammy assured the Guyanese people that as the Minister of Health, he will take to the global stage and make sure that vaccines are equally available to each and every child.
“There are still limitations on the manufacturing capacity. I believe that the equitable access to vaccines in the future can only be assured if the manufacturers from developing countries such as Brazil, Cuba and India are allowed equitable access to the markets”.
