The Managing Director of the Double Day Hotel, located at Tuschen on the East Bank of Essequibo, Harryram Bhola, is peeved at the actions of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, which visited the establishment and demolished a garden as well as a walkway leading to the entrance of the hotel yesterday.
According to Bhola, the entity had written to the relevant Ministry in the past and was in receipt of a verbal agreement by an Engineer with a promise that documentation will follow.
Bhola added that the hotel was issued with a notice to remove all structures but insisted that it did not have any structures in the area in question. Rather he had beautiful flowers that decorate the place.
He said that the subject Minister had even visited the location and had expressed his admiration of what was done but queried if he had got permission. The man said that he assured that he related the promise by the engineer.
“They came, they did not ask anything; they start to rip out the fence and all the flower plants…They say that they were sent to do that.”
The Managing Director of the Hotel also pointed out that the persons that showed up from the Ministry yesterday also damaged a walkway that served as an entrance to the hotel. This walkway, he said, was more than 100 feet from the edge of the roadway. Bhola said that the destroyed garden was easily more than given the substantive grooming and maintenance over time. He was unable to give a cost of the damage to the walkway. “They said that they coming back today to destroy the kissing bridge,” said
Bhola, pointing to the structure that is in another fenced garden at the side of the Hotel which he said is used mostly by persons getting married. “Everybody does come and use the kissing bridge.”
“I said that I can’t fight them…Dem is the government of the day and if this is how they want to promote tourism I ain’t know…Look at the garbage they have all over the road and look at my place.”
This newspaper understands that the hotel was built just prior to the Cricket World Cup in 2007 and was opened by the Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad. All of the demolished sections and threatened property were in place at the time.
