An early morning accident at Butukari on the Essequibo River, has left one man dead and another seriously inujured.
The dead man is 28-year-old Clive Bharrat, of Good Hope, Essequibo Coast. He was said to be the driver of a truck that was transporting logs out of the Butukari back dam, according to reports.
According to21-year-old David Allicock, who was the porter on the truck, the accident occurred around 7:00 hours yesterday.
“The truck crashed into a tree, while going down the hill, and toppled over and the driver was pinned by the timber guard,’’ Allicock related from his bed at the Mackenzie Hospital complex.
Allicock said that the brakes on the truck had been malfunctioning for quite some time, and that was what contributed to the accident.
Relatives took Bharrat and Allicock to the hospital where Bharrat succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Bharrat’s younger brother, Brian Softleigh, said that his elder brother was employed by a logging operation owned by Toolsie Persaud in the Butukari backdam. Another brother, Todd Frank, is reportedly somewhere in the Potaro district.
Clive Bharrat was the eldest of three children for Josephine Softleigh of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast.
