5th annual NBS 2nd division starts Sunday
By Sean Devers
The 5th annual New Building Society (NBS) 40-overs 2nd division cricket competition is scheduled to commence on Sunday and the competition, which attracts 115 teams, was officially launched on Wednesday at the Society’s New Amsterdam office.
Branch Manager Anil Beharry told the gathering that NBS was pleased with the media coverage of the last competition, the professional manner in which the tournament was run and the discipline and standard of cricket shown by the players.
He said that the NBS Board of Directors willing agreed to continue the sponsorship and disclosed that this year funding has been increased from half of a million dollars to $538,000.
“We are happy to contribute to sports and we have to give back to society. Since there are pockets of criminals in almost every area in Guyana and most of them are young people, we feel our competition can help to eradicate crime by providing something positive for the youths to get involved in since we feel that one of the things which help to produce criminals is idleness,” Beharry, a former Berbice senior Inter-County left-arm spinner and present division one player, opined.
Beharry urged Village elders to encourage the youths to get involved in sports and the players to work hard on their cricket to win without losing the enjoyment of playing the game.
Berbice Cricket Board President Keith Foster thanked NBS for their continued support of the competition which he said serves to keep the interest alive just below the first division level.
“With 115 teams playing, lots of persons and Villages are involved and this competition bridges the gap between youth cricket and first division.
It brings out some of the older guys who might not be able to still play first division matches and who can be mentors to the younger players who are now coming up and not quite ready for first division. So to the BCB this is a very important competition,” Foster stressed.
Chairman of the GCB competitions committee Carl Moore informed that the opening round is set for Sunday and that the tournament has been divided into 16 zones.
“Teams have been entering for the past 2 months and the interest for this competition is very high. We have lots of new teams and each year the competition is getting bigger.
We have 5 teams alone from Black Bush and another 5 from Crabwood Creek,” Moore disclosed.
The defending champions are West Bank Berbice team D’Edward and the winning team will collect $60,000 and the Runner-up $30,000 while $200,000 will be presented in total incentives.
