In blazing sunshine, on a lightning fast outfield and watched by a colorful crowd of over 2,000 which produced a carnival-like atmosphere, underdogs Zone B defied all odds to beat Zone A in the final of the Enterprise Premier League 20/20 Inter-Zone cricket competition last Saturday at the Enterprise ground.
The 20/20 Festival in the East Coast Village was organized by the Enterprise Community Literacy Programme (ECLP) and Zone B, which represented Babsi/Roopie team, won the Ministry of Sports Trophy and the $25,000 Busta cash prise as their Skipper and national off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed copped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
According to the organisers, the objective of the competition was to create a space for both players and spectators to participate in a day of organized activities.
The day’s action also provided an opportunity to spot new talent in the community and Coordinator of day’s activities Jaigobind Mahabir and the ECLP should be commended for a well-planned and executed competition.
In the Final, pre-tournament favorites Zone A (Jaimangal/Shaheed team) reached 150-5 in their allotted 20 overs with Parmanand Dindyal (46), Latchman Yadram (41) and Marshal Karamchand (28) leading the way with the bat.
Davendra Persaud took 2-24 while leg-spinner Chanderpaul Singh has 2-16 for Zone B who began their reply cautiously.
Davendra Persaud (70) and First-Class player Zaheer Mohamed (32) joined forces with their team on 68-3 after Kalil Mohamed departed for a cameo 26 and batted Zone B out of the game.
Zone A had to settle for the $15,000 from Grand Costal Inn and the Ministry of Sports Runner-up trophy while Mohamed, the Zone B skipper, received a trophy and $5,000 from Rajesh Balram for being adjudged the Best batsman in the tournament.
Promising youngster Davendra Persaud was the competition’s best bowler and received a trophy from Mr Jairam and $5,000 from Sean Devers.
Zone A was adjudged the best-dressed team and got a cash prise of $5,000 from the Enterprise Library.
The MVP of the competition was Davendra Persaud and he received a bicycle, compliments of Rock Away Auto Sales and cash incentives donated by D. Appana, Karan Ramdoon and B. Samaroo.
Persaud also won the prize for the biggest six while Nishad Ulla received the prize for the best catch.
In the first semi-final, Mohamed (59) and Kaioum Hamid (43) led Zone B to 161-3 in 15 overs. Zone C reached 98-9 with Raja Amit Pooran making 33 and Davendra Persaud 2-19.
In the other semi-final, Bridjanand Singh made 68 and S. Safdar 55 as Zone A made 142-2 in 15 overs. Zone D reached 65-8 despite 20 from Videsh Lall. Yadram and Safdar took 2 wickets each.
