Competes in Antigua tomorrow
By Edison Jefford
Cleveland Forde wants his name etched in the history of the IAAF South American 10km Road Race Classic and as a result, the defending ‘Guyana Stage’ champion will attempt a monumental feat in all three stages at the 2009 event.
The First or Guyana Stage of the South American race will be held on October 25 and the Second or Suriname Stage is scheduled for October 31. Forde has separately won the two Stages before but has never won them consecutively.
The Third Stage is usually held in Panama. His preparation for the colossal task includes competing at the Antiguan Prime Minister’s 10km Road Race tomorrow afternoon and he is fully confident that his plan will be rewarded.
“My training is continuous, meaning that my focus is more long term. I always train since I don’t want to be straining in races,” Forde, Guyana’s leading distance athlete, told Kaieteur Sport in an exclusive interview yesterday.
Nicknamed ‘The Little Kenyan’, Forde had departed Guyana in 2004 for an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Scholarship at Kipchoge Keino High Performance Training Centre in Kenya. He returned to Guyana last year.
His personal best time in the 5000m is 14:07.08 at the South American Championships in 2006. The 24-year-old distance athlete competed at the World Half Marathon and World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.
There is no doubt that Forde has been exposed and brings a wealth of experience to future endeavours. “I always try to be as competitive as possible. I know sometimes I do not get the results I wanted but once I improve,” he retorted.
Forde said that he really does not look for better times in road races because he knows by any stretch of his imagination that he prefers the track. Forde still has hang ups about the career threatening cramps he sustained on the road.
The cramps had cost the athlete the Suriname Marathon last year where he was forced to drop out because of their severity. Since then, Forde has serious reservations about those races that go long distances in the heat of the road.
He said that he hopes his fellow countrymen are making the effort to get ready for South America’s 10k race. “The guys have been doing really well and I am hoping to get some push from them this year,” The Little Kenyan stated.
Forde’s philosophy on race day is that ‘It Can Be Anybody’s Race’. He thanked the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company through Vic Insanally and Terry Holder for making his trip to Antigua tomorrow possible.
