Dowlin added to Demerara squad for Saturday’s match
By Sean Devers
While it was believed that 35-year-old West Indies batting sensation Shivnarine Chanderpaul would have arrived in Guyana this week and would have played for Demerara against Berbice in Saturday’s Inter-County 50-overs final at the Stadium, it has been confirmed that the left-hander will not be in Guyana by Saturday.
Chanderpaul, who has 21 centuries from 121 Test and 51 tons from 245 First-Class matches, ended a successful season for English county side Durham and many of his local fans were hoping to see him in action on Saturday.
However, the reliable batsman from Unity, East Coast Demerara, hit his 6th First-Class double to ensure Durham ended the English First-Class season as the only unbeaten team last month and it is understood that he did not return to his home in Florida but traveled to New York instead.
Yesterday Chairman of the Demerara selection panel and Manager of the Demerara team Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis told Kaieteur Sport that Chanderpaul will not play on Saturday in the Day/Night game.
“I was told by the (GCB) President (Chetram Singh) today that Chanderpaul was not coming for this weekend’s match. I was waiting for confirmation before picking the team and I was hoping that he would have been available,” Adonis, a former Guyana fast bowler, said.
Adonis informed that the 32-year-old Dowlin, who missed Demerara’s match against Berbice at Wales last Sunday to rest after his return trip from South Africa, is available for Saturday’s clash and has been added to the squad.
One of the players who got the opportunity to play for the West Indies due to the ongoing dispute between WIPA and WICB, Dowlin scored a maiden ton against Bangladesh and a fifty against Australia in the Champions Trophy to return home with an average of 43.40 from 6 ODIs.
“We have added Travis to the squad since we did not want to drop anyone and on Saturday everyone who was a part of the squad at Wales plus Travis will be at the Stadium as we look to retain our title with another win against Berbice,” Adonis said.
The defending champions will be captained by Ramnaresh Sarwan and also includes dropped West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson.
Even without Chanderpaul, fans could look forward to seeing exciting cricket since 5 players with ODI experience should be on show in Sarwan, Dowlin, Johnson, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Narsingh Deonarine and Royston Crandon.
The GCB has said that performances in this competition will be used to select the Guyana team for the Regional One-Day competition which commences in Guyana on October 28 and the Guyana 14-man squad is expected to be selected this weekend.
