Dear Editor, One of the unsung services provided by the Georgetown Municipality is the environmental health service. This service falls within the repose of the Municipal Public Health Department. A major aspect of the work of the environmental health inspectorate is the inspection of yards, houses and other facilities to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations of the city of Georgetown. Over the last month, the department made 766 inspections to: Houses and cottages, yards and ‘conveniences’, common Lodging houses and apartments and other premises. In addition, the department addressed over 100 complaints, in different sections of the City. More than 125 defects were discovered by public health inspectors, including dirty yards, overgrowths, and defective septic tanks. Also, the department found and treated 165 breeding places for mosquitoes. The Mayor and City Council is urging citizens to pay keen attention to the way the keep their general surrounding and their houses. It has been observed that many residents have accumulations of rubbish and other things such as old wood stored in their yards. These provide habourage for roaches and rodents, which affect entire neighbourhoods with enormous implications for the health of local communities. Therefore, the Council is asking residents of all local communities to assist its effort to keep the environment healthy by keeping their premises free from such rubbish or accumulations.
