The Guyana Defence Force has launched an investigation into the suspected theft of assault rifle ammunition by one of its officers.
A Sophia resident, who is in custody, has implicated an army lieutenant and another man in attempts to sell some 40 rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition.
The rounds are used in Ak-47 and M-70 assault rifles, which are among weapons used by the army.
However, an army official told Kaieteur News yesterday that investigators have been unable to locate the implicated lieutenant, who is at present on annual leave. Police have also been unable to locate the third suspect.
Kaieteur News was told that the lieutenant is a platoon commander and therefore should not have had access to the Guyana Defence Force armoury.
The allegations came to light on Wednesday after police, acting on information, arrested an A Field, Sophia resident with some 40 rounds of 7.62×39 rounds in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market.
According to a police official, the suspect, who is in his fifties, identified by name an army lieutenant, whom he claimed had given him the ammunition to sell.
“Based on information it appears as if some deviant army officer who is on annual leave is involved,” the official said
The suspect, who is being detained at the Golden Grove Police Station, is said to have also implicated a third man in the deal.
Police searched the suspect’s Sophia house and another residence on the West Bank of Demerara during their investigations on Wednesday.
It was just last July that Commodore Gary Best had said that the army would be constructing an improved weapons storage facility.
The army is still trying to locate about 12 of the 30 AK-47 assault rifles that were stolen from its armoury in 2006.
The majority was recovered from gunmen who were slain by members of the Joint Services.
