Over 3.5m at stake
Horse Race lovers are already planning for the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club/Customs Racing Stable annual one-day Diwali Meet set for Sunday October 18. Eight races are listed on the day’s card, which has at stake a whopping $3.5m in prizes and trophies.
Entries will close on Sunday October 11 and according to reports from the club over 50 of the country’s top horses have already entered the event which is expected to be one of the most exciting days of horse racing on the racing calendar for the year.
Highlighting the days programme will be the feature C class 1200m race. A whopping $350,000 will be at stake for the winner, with the second to fourth place finishers collecting $175,000, $87,000 and 45,000 respectively.
The other main event for three year old animals bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies and known as the Norman Singh Classic has a top prize of $250,000. The distance this time is 1600m.
Other races on the day will be for F and lower over 1200m, the two year old event for non winners born in Guyana over a distance of 1100m for a winning purse of $180,000. ‘G’, ‘H’ and lower (1100m), ‘I and lower 1400m race, unclassified division 1 and 2 (1200m) and the unclassified division 3 class 1200m dash.
There will also be prizes for the champion Jockeys and other outstanding participants compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
This event will be run under the auspices of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority and persons wishing to enter can make contact with Secretary Ghansham ‘Ganesh’ Singh on telephone no. 649 3636, Organising Secretary Campton Sancho on 616 3020 or the Club’s office at 6 Bel Air West Coast Berbice.
Horse owners are also reminded to get their animals properly registered with the Guyana Horse Racing Authority since those not properly entered will not be allowed to participate on race day. Gallop time is 1300hrs.
