Dear Editor,
Firstly, on the premise that the report on Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) stealing power is true and that Kurshid Sattaur did say that he will “deal with them (GPL)”. I think Sattaur has displayed crass bullyism by his remarks.
There is an acceptable practice whereby GRA works with taxpayers regarding the payment of arrears taxes. Owing taxes is not a crime perse’, but stealing electricity is!
Is anyone really shocked at Sattaur’s outburst? I don’t think so. Sattaur carries himself as “holier than thou”. He should pay taxes on his earnings. But no! He works out sweetheart deals for himself, but goes for the jugular of others. Talk about double standards!
Secondly, I don’t hold a brief for the Administration. But the average citizen is fed-up hearing “discrimination”, “oppression”, un-substabtiated cries of “marginalisation”, etc. We must be honest enough to answer whether the perception of these charges is not greater than the reality.
Of course, there exist discrimination, oppression and marginalisation in every society on earth.
I am sure those who are making these charges themselves discriminate on a daily basis. But, why should one be “oppressed” in Guyana if one is willing and able to do an honest day’s work? There cannot be many cases of oppression in that circumstance!
There are tons of jobs out there. People simply do not want to work.
I have been at odds with Afro-centric groups and individuals who use the black masses in Guyana as a convenience when it suits them, rather than putting their expertise and resources to develop our kindred folks.
Let us help ourselves to have self worth. As old people say: Pot must not call skillet black!
