Gold production is expected to break records this year, according to officials of the mining industry.
As of last weekend, production stood at 220,000 ounces and targeted to reach an unprecedented 300,000 ounces at December 31.
Major General (Rtd.), Norman McLean, who made the disclosure last Saturday during an appreciation ceremony of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), said that last year, almost 260,000 ounces of gold was declared to the Guyana Gold Board.
The ceremony was held to honour those who helped to fund GGDMA’s new offices at 29 North Road, Bourda.
Addressing a gathering of officials that included Prime Minister Sam Hinds, whose portfolio included mining, McLean said that miners have challenged themselves to break the 300,000 ounces mark before the year is out. They may never have “such a glorious opportunity” as this year, he added.
Prices for gold have passed US$1,000 per ounce.
“This presents a great incentive for all our miners, all including our Brazilian brothers and sisters who are working and living here.”
He challenged the association to make contribution to the Low Carbon Strategy, one of the top priorities and to take mining to a high standard by using more effective and environmentally sound practices.
GGDMA will also attempt this year to register undocumented foreigners and ensure the growth of the association and of the national economy.
Major General McLean was convinced that gold and diamond production is the largest foreign currency earners for Guyana, not only because of the high gold prices, but because of increasing level of productions over recent years.
The official singled out and lauded GGDMA’s Past President, Alfro Alphonso, and current Executive Director, Tony Shields, for outstanding work for the association.
“He is truly the backbone of the association and I wish to take this opportunity to thank him for his outstanding work in support of our association and our miners,” he said of Shields.
