Misfortune and unfortunate circumstances befall all human beings but sociologists contend that it is not what happens, but how the affected person handles the experience. There is the popular idiom that when life gives you lemon, make lemonade.
Indeed Prahalad Jagnarine is a classical example of how one should view unfortunate circumstances.
Kaieteur News caught up with this young man as he whizzed along Regent Street atop his 110CC motorcycle. It was only on closer examination that this reporter realized that Jagnarine had lost his left leg.
What was even more surprising was that the amputated leg happened to be the one usually used for shifting gears on the motorcycle.
Jagnarine said that he incurred his unfortunate injury about 14 years ago. He said that while going about his business in Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, he encountered a madman parading the streets, armed with a cutlass. As Jagnarine was about to pass the man he (the madman) suddenly attacked him.
Jagnarine said that he fell to the ground and attempted to ward off the blows but the lunatic continued to hack away with the cutlass. When he was eventually rescued by some public spirited citizens, Jagnarine was in a bad state. He was taken to the hospital but despite the valiant efforts of the doctors he lost his leg.
Forced to hobble around on a pair of crutches, and still shackled with the challenges of looking after his family, the young man came up with an ingenious idea to move from one place to the next. He bought a motorcycle and readjusted the gear lever to facilitate his injury.
Instead of changing the gears with his (non-existent) left leg, the young man remodeled the gadget so that the gears are now shifted by hand. He is now capable of going about his business unhindered. Unless one looks carefully as he whizzes by, Jagnarine would be easily mistaken for an able bodied seaman.
