Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy is still optimistic that of the 10,000 units of blood targeted to be collected per year, at least 80 per cent will be achieved by year end.
During an interview, Dr Ramsammy revealed that the countrywide blood drives for the first nine months, has acquired more than 5100 units of blood; just over the half way mark of the target.
The Minister noted that in order to achieve 8,000 units of blood the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) would have to acquire at least 900 units of blood per month for the remainder of the year.
He did, however, admit that it was a tall order to aim for, given that the most he could recall collecting in a one month’s period was 650 units.
Whilst conceding that the 10,000 unit target would not be met this year, Dr Ramsammy recognized the work put in by the staff that took part in the blood drives, and feels they deserve the credit for their achievement thus far.
He especially commended NBTS’s National Blood Donor Manager, Shameeza Mangal, who he said lives for her job. Dr. Ramsammy felt that added to the good job well done, the response from the Guyanese people to the efforts made by the staffers is an added bonus.
“We have more than tripled the number of persons that have become voluntary donors”
According to the Minister, there needs to be an increase in the number of donors that would make it an event to look forward to.
