The Ministry of Labour, as part of its commitment to promoting HIV/AIDS workplace policy programmes, will be conducting a total of 4000 inspections at business entities before the end of the year.
This is according to Labour Minister, Manzoor Nadir, who noted that his Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), where there officers will be empowered to do labour inspections and the officers at the Labour Ministry will do NIS inspections.
Minister Nadir explained that his Ministry is in the process of mainstreaming the work of HIV/AIDS into the work programme, as every single labour officer will become a ‘general’ in the battle of HIV AIDS.
“In the software that we have, when we go and do an inspection, one of the seven components of the inspection that our labour officers will do at the workplace is intensive inspection with respect to the HIV AIDS intervention in that worksite.”
According to Nadir, over the last two months, there were 23 interventions by the Labour Ministry in tackling the virus in the workplace.
He chided the heads of the various companies for not attending the Ministry’s programmes that seriously dealt with HIV/AIDS education.
“We want to educate every worker from the washroom to the boardroom; from the janitor to the manager…we want to educate every single one,” Minister Nadir told a gathering at the Pegasus hotel on Monday night during the launch of a two day programme on HIV AIDS workplace policy.
The Labour Minister explained that despite the many challenges being experienced, there have been good responses from several areas, as the labour officers from the Ministry, at the invitation of Iwokrama went out and did counseling and testing.
During this session, over 100 persons turned up at the site to be counseled and tested.
“So clearly we are seeing some good responses…clearly the information and education part of the program is reaching out to the people and yes we still have a lot of work to do to meet the other stages.”
However, it was noted that thousands of US dollars was spent by the Ministry in an HIV AIDS outreach on the Essequibo Coast, where there was a poor turn out.
According to Nadir, the labour officers only reached out to 25 per cent of the target.
In order to rectify this situation, the Labour Ministry has now developed an effective data and reporting mechanism, where they can now analyze the information and know where they went wrong, so that in the future, there can be a better turn out in these outreaches.
