GCC produced a solid night of hockey as the Banks Night Hockey Championships continued on Monday night, at Thirst Park.
They won all three of their matches by 2-goal margins. Flora GCC ladies opened the evening with a 4-2 win over Old Fort ‘B’ and that was followed by their ‘B’ unit’s 2-0 triumph over Western Dragons in a Second Division encounter, while the senior team won by a similar margin in their clash against Old Fort ‘A’ in the final match of the evening.
The other game of the evening saw Hikers ‘B’ defeat Carib Degenerates 2-0.
In the feature match, GCC ‘A’ looked the more offensive of the two teams as Old Fort fielded a defensive line-up with top player Aderemi ‘Dove’ Simon playing the sweeper position instead of his customary high midfield role.
GCC enjoyed the greater part of possession and benefited when Philip Fernandes opened his team’s account with a powerful strike from close range off a penalty corner rebound in the 6th minute.
Old Fort’s defence stepped up their game as the team begun to play some attractive hockey in midfield, but they seemed unable to make the necessary inroads at the striking end.
GCC took a 1-0 lead into the half and on the resumption resumed their pressure which produced a positive result in the 41st minute when Fernandes drove the ball to the right of the striking circle before blasting his shot into the far corner past a flat-footed Michel Smith in the Old Fort goal. The score remained 2-0 until the final whistle.
In the opening game, Flora GCC ladies surprised all by pulling off an upset win over Old Fort ‘B’. Captain Sonia Jardine led from the front with a hat-trick, while her sister Kerensa Fernandes added the team’s fourth.
Old Fort’s goals came off the stick of Jason De Santos who fought bravely for the team, but lacked the support to improve the result.
Hikers ‘B’ found the going easy against the aging Carib Degenerates and made light work of them with a goal each from Shaquille Assanah and Leon Bacchus, both coming in the first half.
GCC ‘B’ faced the usual pace and condition of Western Dragons next, but Trevon Smith in the 6th minute and Shaka Gill in the 43rd put the game out of reach for the Dragons, handing GCC the victory.
GCC rejoins Hikers on top of the men’s First Division pool with 6 points although the latter have played one game less.
GCC with 10 points holds a narrow lead over Hikers on 9 in the Men’s Second Division pool.
Flora GCC ladies move into the third spot with 7 points ahead of Western Dragons on 6. Old Fort and Carib Degenerates have 1 point each, while Hikers ladies are yet to get off the mark.
Matches continue at Thirst Park tonight with the opening clash between Hikers ladies and Old Fort ‘B’.
Flora GCC Ladies take on Western Dragons followed by GCC ‘B’ versus Carib Degenerates to round off the B division matches for the evening. The lone ‘A’ Division match is between Old Fort and Hikers with the former keen to register their first win in the second round of the competition. Matches start at 18:30hrs.
