Zeeburg beat Vergenoegen by 44 runs in the final of the Barakat Brothers 40-over Cricket Competition on Sunday last at the West Meten-Meer-Zorg ground.
Yetesh Dhanpaul hit 9 fours in 89 to lead Zeeburg to 227 all out in 37.5 overs. Left-arm spinner Timur Mohamed then grabbed 5-26 on his way to a Man-of-the-Match performance as Vergenoegen fell for 181 all out.
Asked to bat, Zeeburg openers Amit Jairam (27) and Skipper Mandalall Doodnarine (10) put on 43 on a good track and fast outfield before Doodnarine was L.B.W to Alwick Legall.
Jairam fell to Legall at 54-2 in the seventh over before Joel Ramsahai (14) was removed by Shurland Wilson at 77-3.
Safraz Karim (28) was then dismissed by Mark Miller at 141-5 after he had added 54 with Dhanpaul, who batted brilliantly before he was eventually caught behind off Arnold Padmore leaving Mohamed unbeaten on 21.
Trelon Garraway 3-44 from seven overs, Alwick Legall 2-10 from four overs, Mark Miller 2-38 and Arnold Padmore 2-47 shared the wickets for Vergenoegen.
In reply, the East Bank Essequibo team, urged on by their supporters were off to a good start as Dwayne Graham and Kevin Boodie put together 42 in six overs before Mohamed made the break through with his third ball when he had Graham caught at short cover for 19. Mohamed then bowled Adil Bart next ball and from 42-2 Vergenoegen slipped to 93-5.

Kevin Boodie was caught by Mohamed off Skipper Mandalall Doodnarine for a fluent 44 with 6 fours and one six and Mohamed grabbed three more quick wickets to leave Vergenoegen at 137-9. Veterans Padmore (39) and Wilson (16*) added 44 for the last wicket.
Doodnarine (2-30) supported Mohamed to give his team their first title in the Barakat Brothers Competition.
Zeeburg pocketed $120,000 and trophy. Vergenoegen received $60,000 and trophy.
Timur Mohamed walked away with $10,000 and a trophy for his man-of-the-match in the finals.
Javid Shafeek of Vergenoegen collected $10,000 and a trophy for the most wickets in the competition, 19. Jitendra Kishore of Leonora collected $10,000 and a trophy for scoring the most runs in the competition, 205.
At the presentation, Regional Chairman Julius Faeber spoke about the contribution that the Barakat Brothers have made to cricket on West Demerara and urged them to continue towards the development of the sport in the area.
