Horses of the Customs Racing Stable lead by feature C class winner Sweet Caramel and double winner Customs Warrior made sure it was a dominant day for animals from that entity as they won four events when the Anjue and Hamlet Park Racing Stable held a successful one-day eight event meet on Sunday last at the Club’s race track at Mahaicony Branch Road, East Coast Demerara.
Mrs. Naljit of the GHRA presents the winning trophy in the feature C class event to young Ann Singh of the Customs racing stable.
The main event lived up to all expectations and was a classic to the end. The American imported combination of Sweet Caramel and Irish Gel were up against each other, Sweet Carmel mounted by Daniel Floris of the Customs racing stable and trained by Tillack Dharry outshone its opponents to show that it has acclimatized enough to win the 1200m event in a driving finish from the inform Irish Gel to claim the $300,000 first prize and trophy compliments of the Mahaicony Racing stable.
Sweet Caramel, which has been improving with every meet, was out of the Gates like a shot from a gun as Irish Gel of the Singh’s stable with Kumar Singh on board and Pinch de Cash of the Rumour’s Racing Stable made desperate efforts to catch up.
Sweet Caramel was caught on the far turn by Irish Gel and as the two Yankee bred horses which is part of the much vaunted American invasion beginning to show signs why they were bought and ready to take over.
The two animals continued to battle for the lead as they plundered into the home stretch and towards the finishing line it was then Jockey Floris decided to call on his stead for the showdown as Sweet Caramel answered with a final burst of speed moving away to win by half a length.
It was an upset win for the thoroughbred’s and its first win on local soil. Pinch de Cash with Prem Chandra on the mount held on for third.

The three-year-old event for horses born and Bred in Guyana and the West Indies which was run over a similar 1200m distance and sponsored by Banks DIH Limited for a $200,000 first prize saw Sweet Romance of the Chris Jagdeo stable, trained by Andrew Jagdeo returning to winning ways as it took pole position from Prixie Fire.
Sweet Romance which was defeated by Nigh Crescendo in its last race one week ago won from gate to pole with jockey Kumar Singh in the stirrups.
The two year old event which was for locally bred horses and run over a distance of 1000m with a first prize of $180,000 on offer winner compliments of the Anjue and Hamlet Race Club for the D. Singh trophy was won by Stormy Water of the Mahaicony Racing Stable in a driving finish. Second was Little Spike of the Ghansham Singh Stable, Infinity and G.T Rush.
Sweet Romance (Chris Jagdeo Stable) performance in the two year olds non winner’s event was the talk of the day. The horse which was running for the first time battered its opponents into submission to win by some 8 lengths.
Jockey Michael Semple again was aboard another winner as Sweet Romance showed that it will be a force to reckon with in the future. The win was worth $150,000 and the distance was 1000m. All Indian and Time Dancer finished second and third.
The F and lower event saw the Gap of the Customs Racing Stable with jockey Yap Drepaul aboard edging out Mattarazzi of the Jagdeo Stable with Kumar Singh on the mount by a neck in one of the better races of the day to the $180.000 top prize in the 1200m gallop. Laura Lee in Flight and Baby Boy rounded out the money.
Dad News of the Leary Robinson stable ridden by Kumar Singh continued to make sure it is unwelcome news for its opponents with another convincing victory in the G 3 and lower 1200m event.
The animal which has been in devastating form since returning after a long layoff recorded its fourth consecutive victory in five starts and collected the top prize of $120,000.
Baby Boy and World Class finished second and third.
Double winner Customs Warrior of the Customs Racing and ridden by Daniel Floris first held off the challenges of Madonna, Easy Go, and Sunday Star to win the division 1 and 2 race and with it the $90,000 winner’s purse in the 1200m race.
Custom Warrior returned later in the day to win the ‘I’ and lower contest from Channel Boy, Madonna and Sarah with a scorching run down the home stretch in the 1200 meter race.
Finishing Line won the division 3 1200m contest event from Asaranie. The win was worth $80,000.
Champion Jockey was Kumar Singh. Customs racing stable took the Champion stable honors with Tillack Dharry of the same stable being adjudged the champion trainer.
Over $3 million dollars in cash along with trophies were on offer, with some 60 horses taking to the starting gate.
