Wendell Meusa turned in another brilliant performance to cart off the spoils and qualify for the National Championships slated for later this month when the National Chess Qualification tournament concluded at the Kei-Shars Sports Club Sunday morning last.
The aspiring grand master added the scalps of three notable players to his collection including Brian Thompson, Learie Webster and President of the National Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari.
Six other players also turned in credible performances to join Meusa to contest for the National championships. They are Learie Webster, Taffin Khan, Chino Chung, Ronuel Greenidge, Omar Shariff and Brian Thompson. Current national champion, Kriskal Persaud will also join these players to contest in a double round robin affair starting this month end.
Meusa starting the final day already assured of qualification while ten other players, all with realistic chances of qualifying, were bundled together in the points standing, in some cases by merely a half, or one point.
Meusa first faced Ronuel Greenidge and a vicious battle for honours ensued with both players enjoying bright moments. Both contestants demonstrated the kind of determination akin to grandmasters and eventually settled for a draw. Meusa’s achievement is even more appreciated when it is noted that in round ten he experienced grave challenges against Chino Chung. In that encounter, he was down a knight and on the brink of defeat. Try as he might, he could not turn his fortunes and eventually conceded. Brian Thompson also had a good tournament, registering victories against Tiwari and Nathoo while holding Taffin Khan and Shiv Nandalall to draws in round nine and ten respectively.
The final points standing is Wendell Meusa (7 1/2), Learie Webster, Taffin Khan and Chino Chung (7), Ronuel Greenidge, Omar Shariff, Brian Thompson and Loris Nathoo (6 1/2) and Errol Tiwari and Shiv Nandalall (6).
Meanwhile, youth player, Sham Khan played undefeated, registering 6 victories while conceding four draws to eventually prevail in the junior category. The competitive level was high amongst the juniors and it was only in the final round that the top eight was determined.
The other seven players who have qualified to contest for the Junior National Championship are; Saeed Ali, Rashad Hussain, Raan Motilall, Crystal Khan, Stanley Ming Jr., Kana Khan and Cecil Cox. This group will also engage in a double round robin this month end.
The final points standing; Sham Khan and Saeed Ali 8 points apiece with Khan nosing ahead by dint of the Median Buchholz Tiebreaker System, Rashad Hussain (7 ½), Raan Motilall (7), Crystal Khan and Stanley Ming Jr (6 ½), while Kana Khan and Cecil Cox are on six apiece.
