Dear Editor,
Mike Persaud in his letter “Rohanie Persaud’s arguments are baffling” (Kaieteur News 3rd October, 2009) thinks I am a “hired gun”, “obviously fictitious”, “an attack dog” and my “arguments are baffling.”
In all the cases the finger points back to Mike Persaud. Mike finds it strange Rohanie can think political and share views through the newspapers since he has come to expect any view I have will only be shared in the home, I shouldn’t have a view and if I do I have to be “obviously fictitious” or a “hired gun”.
I called out a lie being peddled by the AFC and Mr. Freddie Kissoon that the AFC is the only multiracial party and showed reasons why I believe it is not. I never attacked Mr. Boyo Ramsaroop. Mr. Ramsaroop wrote his letter after mine, making reference to me and asked me to take another look at the AFC because he sees it as the party to bring racial harmony.
To the three criteria Mike Persaud asked readers to use to evaluate whether a party is multiracial or not, I’ll attempt to answer them:
It doesn’t make sense for a party to have written rules that a leader can only come from one ethnic group. There are unwritten rules where this happens. Mike needs to educate readers on the AFC’s rule which says its leadership must come from an Indian and African; then educate readers how a Chinese, Portuguese, Amerindian, or European can or cannot be.
Does the party practically draw its vote from more than 95% of one particular group? I don’t know, neither does Mike. What Mike and I know the PNC and AFC draw its majority of votes from Africans, PPP from Indians, GAP from Amerindians and ROAR from Indians.
Do the party convention delegates and its Executive and Central Committee overwhelmingly come from one ethnic group? Do the math Mike and you’ll be surprised the answer is almost identical for the AFC, PNC and PPP.
Mike wants to know where the 2006 AFC votes came from; was it from Indians or Africans? The fact the AFC won all its seats from the PNC strongholds should answer the question. Decent Guyanese people do not want the country to be stuck in any racial and political quagmire as equal as they do not want the AFC to lie to them.
Mike Persaud’s efforts to dismiss me in support of his party do not change the fact, i.e. the AFC is not the only multiracial party. Find a brand identity for the AFC, but the only multiracial party identity cannot stick because it is not true. Do not attack me for thinking and thinking out loud, ask the AFC to think others can think and it should come up with arguments that will not make it out to be dishonest.
Rohanie Persaud
