Guyana’s six member team returned from the 37th Central American & Caribbean Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships on Sunday evening with one silver and bronze medal following competition in Grenada on Saturday.
Barbados copped the overall title at this event.
Bantamweight Marlon Bennett captured silver in his category which was won by another Guyanese, Hemradj Mulai who represented Aruba. Mulai also competed at the World champions last year placing 8th.
Copping bronze was welterweight Alfred Jordon; Barbadian Hoskin Worrell took this category.
Jordon noted that it was a dream year for him coming through the ranks as a novice, intermediate and senior athlete and crowning it off at the CAC.
CAC he said was very competitive where the athletes are more developed, showcasing good physiques. Jordon believes that the level of the sport needs to be lifted in Guyana.
The lone female competitor, Alicia Fortune placed 5th in the final of the under 55kg category and according to President of the Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation President Frank Tucker, the overall showing of the team was creditable given the fact that only one competitor, Clint Duke, had prior experience at this level.
Senior Mr. Guyana Oswin Jones Tucker said encountered problems with making the weight for the heavyweight division.
Tucker is also of the belief that Fortune’s placing can serve as a fillip to attract more female athletes to the sport. “Ms. Fortune placing fifth should be some encouragement to the women who indulge in bodybuilding, that there is a place for them at the higher level.
They can go forward and do well on the international stage.”
The GABBFF Tucker said, would be doing their utmost to ensure that the bodybuilding public is exposed to international stars while mentioning that fourth place finisher at the prestigious Mr. Olympia Dennis James was one of two guest posers at the event.
The other guest poser was Grenada’s Vaughn Francis, who won the CAC two years ago.
“We’ll be trying to see if we can bring Mr. James to Guyana sometime in the near future. Seeing these athletes will add some fillip to the sport and I’m sure the Guyanese public will be glad to see these athletes.”
Other category winners at CAC 2009 were lightweight Diego Salinas of El Salvador, Bermuda’s lightweight Ross Caeser, Puerto Rican Juan Carlos Bega capturing the heavyweight title, and Jamaica’s Phillip Clahar, the super heavyweight champion.
About 250 bodybuilders and delegates from 19 countries participated at CAC which will be held in Aruba next year.
The GABBFF has expressed gratitude to a number of sponsors whose combined efforts contributed to Team Guyana’s presence in Grenada.
Caribbean Airline, Guyana Oil Company, Kings Jewelry World, Exclusive Styles, Queensway Shipping, Jai’s Signs and Designs, Professional Key Shop, Hits & Jams TV, Hacks Hallow Blocks, Total Fitness Gym, Guyana Defense Force, Ministry of Culture Youth & Sport and Hugh Ross.
