A man who yesterday attempted to steal sugar cane from a yard on Lombard street, Georgetown, was attacked by two pit bulls and had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to the owner of the dogs, Desmond Lewis, he was at work when he received a call from his son that a thief was in the yard and that two of the dogs had attacked the man.
The cane thief, Patrick Reid, 49, of Lot 6 Second Street, Meadow Bank, Georgetown, was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He sustained bites to the ear, lip, face, abdomen, hands and feet.
Lewis said that when he rushed home he had to fight off the dogs to free the cane thief. This is the third time for the year that Lewis’ yard has attracted thieves.
The last time was some four months ago when the two dogs mauled a man who tried to steal mangoes.
Lewis said that he was frustrated. “Nothing yo can’t have in this yard; you get li’l flower plant, and that and all they will thief,” he told Kaieteur News as he awaited an ambulance to pick up the most recent thief.
While a crowd of onlookers gathered to see Reid’s bloodied body, the man dragged his way out of the yard and into a nearby drain to get some water to ease the pain about his body. He was later picked up by an ambulance. Lewis said he will now cut down his canes to avoid further trouble.
He has four pit bulls; the two that mauled the cane thief are “pups.”
