The first day of another school week, has seen children from the Christianburg Nursery School on Burnham Drive, Wismar, Linden, turning up for school as usual.
These children have taken to building sand castles with sand they do not even have to leave their classroom to acquire since it is available literally at their toe tips!
But while the children enjoy the games on the ‘sandcrete’ floor, parents are perturbed, as this seemingly innocuous pastime, is creating havoc with the children’s health.
“There are asthmatic children in this school, and the sand and accompanying dust are not good for them; already some of them are suffering more frequent attacks,” an angry parent declared.
Sweeping the school is a nightmare, according to the parents. Dust prevails.
There are also reports that some pupils have developed ‘sandworms’ and other skin conditions, associated with the overexposure to the ‘sandcrete’.
The concerned parents said that they spoke with officials at the Regional Education Department about the deplorable state of the school floor, but were told that rehabilitative works could not be done before the close of the school term. At least two weeks will be required to effect the necessary repairs, the officials said.
However, the parents are adamant that if this situation is not rectified soon, they will be forced to shut down the school.
The PTA is expected to meet tomorrow to further examine the situation.
Parents vociferously condemned the substandard work that was done by the building contractor, resulting in a damaged floor less than three years after those works were executed.
According to the parents, the estimated cost to resurface the floor with an inch of concrete is $160,000, and that does not include the cost of labour.
Other causes for concern to the parents were the ceiling fans, which have all stopped working, and lights which work sporadically.
