Albion, Anna Regina to host matches
By Sean Devers
The Neal & Massy National 40-overs first division cricket competition has reached the semi-finals stage and tomorrow matches will be held at Albion in Berbice and Anna Regina in Essequibo.
In Corentyne, Berbice runner-up Albion face Demerara champions Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) while in Region 2, Essequibo winner North Essequibo battle Berbice champions Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHTWSB) and both matches are scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
Albion who lost to RHTWSB in the Berbice final have a powerful batting line-up and if the Chattergoon siblings, Harrinarine and Test player Sewnarine build a solid foundation on what should be a placid track then the middle order of Test left-hander Narsingh Deonarine and Berbice batsmen Ranga Latchana and the potentially destructive Jonathon Foo could have a base to work on.
Veerasammy Permaul and Davindra Bishoo could also bat and the MSC bowling could be put under pressure on the large ground in what should be very hot conditions.
National under-19 pacer Seon Daniels will lead the new ball attack for the City side with Lennox Cush, Steven Jacobs, Orin Forde, Deon Ferrier and Berbice-born left-arm spinner Damien Vantull providing the spin for the visitors. Albion’s bowling should be spin-based with pacer Doodnauth Lallbeharry sharing the new ball and Orvin Mangru, Deonarine, Chattergoon, Bishoo and Permaul doing the spinning.
The MSC batting is also strong and if openers Shemroy Barrington and Cush get stuck into the Albion bowlers then Jacobs, Forde, Ferrier, Randy Lindore, Kwame Crosse and Sarfraz Esau will have a good foundation to build on.
On the Essequibo Coast, RHTWSB are favored to beat North Essequibo and will depend on their powerful batting line-up to post a big total if they bat first on what could be a track with variable bounce and rough outfield.
Berbice player Delbert Hicks, Khemraj Mahadeo, West Indies player Royston Crandon, Assad Fudadin, Renrick Batson, Esuan Crandon and Eon Hooper are all capable of outstanding performances with the bat while the Crandon brothers,
Hooper, Fudadin and left-arm spinner Ravi Narine should take care of the bowling duties.
North Essequibo will be captained by former Essequibo Inter-County left-hander Elroy Stephney and they will hope that Vishwanauth Lall, Navin Singh and Navin Bahadur could offer resistance with the bat and that medium pacer Poonraj Singh and former Essequibo under-15 left-arm spinner Darrell Romeo can pick up some quick wickets.
The winners will clash in Day/Night final at the Guyana National Stadium on Sunday October 18.
