A fine allround performance by Guyana U-19 vice captain Royston Alkins guided South Essequibo to a thrilling 1 wicket victory over East Bank Essequibo in the final of the Busta 50 overs Essequibo Cricket festival played on Sunday at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Alkins took 4-14 off 7 overs with his off spin as East Bank Essequibo, who were asked to bat first on a track with preparation moisture, were bowled out for 129 in 39.4 overs in front of a fair size crowd which included Managing Director of Guyana Beverage Inc., Robert Selman. Alkins was supported by former national U-19 player Dillon Heyliger who grabbed 2-27 from 6 overs and Anthony Adams 2-37 off 10 overs.
Left hander Yogister Bachan was the leading run getter for the visitors with 46 while Jason Heyliger contributed 38.
South Esseq2uibo in reply made 132-9 off 31.5 overs. Alkins top scored with 70 while Royan Federicks made 17 as left arm spinner Sase Narine bagged 4-14 off 7.5 overs, national pacer Trevon Garraway 3-52 off 10 overs and Jason Heyliger 2-20 from 4 overs in a losing cause for East Bank Essequibo.
Alkins was named man-of-the-match while Royan Federicks emerged as the competition’s best batsman and Garraway the leading bowler. They all received prizes for their efforts. South took the winning trophy and East Bank the runner up prize.
At the presentation ceremony Mr. Selman thanked the Essequibo Cricket Board for running a well organised tournament and pledged to continue supporting Essequibo Cricket.
