A fracas last Thursday between a teacher of a recently established city private school and the principal, ended with both parties being detained for questioning.
According to reports, the young woman was standing outside of the building, when the principal, who is also the owner, approached her and snatched her purse out of her hand.
Kaieteur News understands that the young teacher was also appointed as receptionist to the school earlier that day, and was therefore in charge of handling the school’s cash.
Reports say that she had left the school with the days earnings, and was confronted in front of the building by the principal, where the two had a scuffle and the purse was snatched.
The teacher made reports at the police station, and the principal was then taken for questioning.
The principal then made his own accusations against the teacher at the police station, and the young woman was held for questioning.
However, after giving her account of the incident, the principal was arrested and taken to Brickdam as well.
A source close to the school confirmed that teachers have not been paid for the month since September 1.
Kaieteur News understands that the teachers made several attempts to collect their salaries, but the owner refused to hand over their monthly dues.
Kaieteur News has gathered from students and teachers that the class rooms are in a terrible condition, and that most teachers at the school have no interest in teaching at all.
Of the nine subjects offered by the school, only six have teachers capable of teaching the subjects.
Further reports from students at the school say that their principal is in the habit of yelling at them and “cussing them out.”
Students said that in one instance the children were in a classroom doing nothing, because they had no teacher, when the principal entered and yelled at the children for being lazy and unproductive.
A source in the school told Kaieteur News that all sorts of unscrupulous activities are allowed at the school; which includes male teachers making sexual advances towards the female students.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, the principal denied any confrontation between himself and the teacher, and described the whole scenario as a misunderstanding, adding that he had no idea as to why the teacher complained to the police in the first place.
