One day, yes one day, after the PPP is defeated, names will be revealed of those who fought valiantly for democratic restoration and free and fair elections only to find that the PPP Government became the most terrible administration in any English-speaking West Indian state.
Some fear victimization because of the type of positions they hold in Guyana. Others are quite open about their feelings. The list includes the WPA freedom fighters, people like Lincoln Lewis and many others.
As for me, I have a daily column, so unlike those whose views cannot be obtained by the Guyanese people, I can make mine known. Let me say out loudly, clearly and in words that cannot be misinterpreted – the PPP Government since the death of Cheddi Jagan has become a regime that has exceeded the moral nastiness, political degeneracy, administrative incompetence and racist policies of any previous government known in this country.
Let me proclaim boldly, using words I will not ever contemplate of withdrawing – I believe the present regime in Guyana is the worst set of rulers any CARICOM state has had the misfortune of having as a government.
We believe back then that Burnham was bad. We thought we had seen dictatorship in full flow when Burnham dominated. We felt that the injustices and wrongs of the Burnham junta were too much to bear. Now we look back at the decades of the seventies and eighties and the daily epiphany follows us like a creeping, haunting shadow – the present dictators are worse.
Three weeks ago, I spoke to one of the visiting media delegates that were here recently to conduct a CIDA-sponsored workshop on freedom of the press. She is from Jamaica.
Last week, I spoke to Dr. Mark Kirton who lives in Trinidad. My question was – how in those islands people view what is going on in Guyana. I was told that Jamaicans and Trinidadians see Guyanese as soft people. I was told that the Jamaicans and Trinidadian would never tolerate the things that are happening in Guyana.
Friday afternoon, Mark Benschop asked me to accompany him outside the office of the Police Commissioner to protest police inaction in the Kwame Mc Koy tape.
I knew in my heart I couldn’t refuse because Benschop would have been there alone. I knew that my conscience would not have allowed me to refuse Benschop because this young man stands alone in fighting an elected dictatorship, a concept that has become new to the study of politics and which has been popularized by the brilliant American theorist, Fareed Zakaria. Zakaria, with trenchant insight, shows how freedoms could become endangered in countries where there are freely elected governments.
I have learnt that a Guyanese professor, Dr. Shamir Ally is in touch with Zakaria and has requested him to comment on the elected dictatorship in Guyana.
Something deadly and evil has come over the ruling cabal in Guyana. We do not see a day pass without a semi-fascist policy implementation by this cabal.
We do not see a day pass without an insensitive act of cruelty by this elected dictatorship. It is time to speak directly to East Indians and ask them to prepare themselves for the voting out of this junta that has done so much to destroy Guyana.
As people would come to me and say, “Well Freddie, you think Burnham destroyed Guyana, look at who is destroying it now.” The trials and tribulations of the Singhs should open the eyes of Indians. Let Indian people tell us which Portuguese and Indian judge that Burnham didn’t like had their pensions denied.
There was not one case. Justice Jainarine Singh made it known that he thinks he is being victimized because of some of his ruling that the Government didn’t like.
Do Indian people know who Doodnauth Singh is? He is the man who single-handedly is responsible for the PPP Government being in office today. He secretly swore in Mrs. Jagan as President after the 1997 election.
He made that move because courts papers were being prepared to stop Mrs. Jagan from being the President. He got word of that and administered the oath of office to her.
When the writ came, Mrs. Jagan and Mr. Doodnauth Singh rendered it null and void because she was already President. Mrs. Jagan threw the writ over her shoulders.
Look at what the cabal did to Singh? Denied him his gratuity because he left the cabinet citing illness but had some disagreement with, you know who?
They paid him on Friday because they are afraid of the effect it had on Indians. It’s too late for them. Vote them out!
