A classic display of guts and determination earned Walter Grant-Stuart the first prize in the 25 laps event when the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club staged a track cycle meeting at the Everest Cricket Club Ground, yesterday afternoon.
Grant-Stuart, who had lost one of his arms in an earlier accident, proved what could be achieved irrespective of one’s circumstances. The young man rode a commanding race that left many other seasoned riders in his wake; some by more than a lap. Junior Niles came in a distant second while Enzo Matthew sealed off the podium spots.
For his efforts Grant-Stuart carted off $25,000 which included $19,000 for the numerous prime prizes plus $6,000 bonus money. Cyclists competing in the feature race carted off more than $40,000 in prize money.
Grant-Stuart rode like a man possessed, flying around the Everest circuit with a terrific burst speed. Even after he was comfortably ahead, by one lap, and in other cases, two, the cyclist refused to ease the pressure. He simply whizzed around the track as a man with a mission and his eventual victory was fitting reward for a job well done. Indeed the day was filled with excitement from the very first race when Brandon Baker out-rode a competitive field to register a win in the 12-14 years Boys 5 laps event. In that race Marcia Dick finished second.
Linden Blackman proved that age is merely a number when he defeated Junior Niles and Eon Jackson, in that order, in the Veteran U-50, 4 laps event.
Christopher Holder also had an especially good day, winning the Juniors 5 laps event before returning to claim victories in the Juveniles 6 laps event, the Juniors Open and the Juniors Unknown Distance.
There were also good performances from Raymond Perez, who won the BMX Boys 9-12 years race over 4 laps and a similar event over 5 laps.
Other winners are: Brandon Barker (12-14 Boys 6 laps), Alonzo Greaves (Category 1 and 2, 12 laps event, Junior Niles (Veteran U45, 5 laps event, Aubrey Springer (Veterans Over 45), Kester Croal (BMX Girls 6-12 years and upright cycle race), Raymond Perez (BMX Boys 6-9 years), Raymond Perez (BMX Boys 6-9 years), Mario King (BMX Boys 12-14 years), Kunta McKenzie (BMX Girls 6-12 years), Crystal Blackman (BMX Girls 6-12 years) and Alonzo Greaves (Devil takes the Hindmost Open)
