The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) says, Guyana’s semiprecious stones have potential for excellent business and as a result, the Commission is highlighting the resources at GUYEXPO.
Deposits containing over 15 million tons of bedded Jasper and Chert are found within a 10-mile radius of Orinduik, Kurukabaru and Kato villages in Region Eight, a report prepared by Geologist Karen Livan points out.
The exotic stones on display at the GGMC booth range from Jasper, Amethyst, and Agate, Black Pearl and Green Quartz. All the stones showcased were obtained from Guyana’s interior.
“As the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission has shown by the creative designs, our semi-precious stones in Guyana have good potential for supporting lapidary manufactures of jewellery,” a personnel of the commission said.
However, it was noted that even though they present excellent economic prospect for the creative entrepreneur, these resources remain under-exploited.
The GGMC has exerted a resolute attitude in promoting the development of lapidary manufactures of the country’s semi precious stones.
Such promotional support has extended from the mapping and quantification of geological resources, to the establishment of a lapidary, and training of staff in different aspects of creating cabochon and artifacts from semi-precious stones.
