A fire behind the Guyana Forestry Commission compound in Kingston, yesterday afternoon consumed four sewage pipelines belonging to the Guyana Pegasus Hotel.
The fire started at around 13:00hrs, and according to eyewitnesses, the fire service took some time to respond.
Kaieteur News understands that the fire grew more out of control, since it was fueled by the flammable material of the pipes aided by the strong Atlantic breeze.
Firefighters battled the flames for almost four hours in order to take control of the fire which grew rapidly.
It was eventually extinguished at around 16:00hrs.
A security guard who works close to the scene of the fire told this newspaper that the Fire Service was summoned two weeks ago to engage homeless people who cook on the seawall with the aim of sensitising them of the hazard they pose to the area.
They also cautioned others who smoke and throw their lighted cigarette butts on the dry grass around the area.
