A two storey house was destroyed by fire yesterday, leaving a family of four homeless and in shock.
Compton Bowen, 27, an engineer of 126 Ogle Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara and his two sisters are now contemplating where they will rest their heads, following the fire which began around 16:00 hours.
Bowen was left in charge of a wood and concrete house by his parents who live overseas.
His two sisters, Trisha Abrams 23, a cosmetologist and Neressa Soloman, 27, a housewife, and his brother in law, had occupied the house.
Sources revealed the sisters were home when the fire started.
It is believed that it is electrical in origin since it was observed that the Guyana Power Light wire attached to the upper flat was sparking due to the fluctuation in electricity.
However, no one paid much attention until it was too late.
According to eyewitnesses, when the fire started, an alarm was raised but no water was around.
However, the GuySuCo fire tender came to assist until the firefighters from Georgetown arrived.
The blaze lasted for about one hour before it was finally contained.
Although the southern fence was destroyed, the firemen were successful in preventing the fire from damaging other nearby buildings.
Family members were too distraught to speak with this newspaper but Compton Bowen estimated the loss at $20M.
