The ‘Country Teams’ continue to prove that they are a force to reckon with when play in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League continued yesterday.
East Coast division-one champions, Buxton United defeated home team Seawall FC 2-1 at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground. Up at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, home team Rosignol United were in no mood to allow Sunburst Camptown to dictate proceedings as the Berbice team triumphed 2-1 while at the Bartica Community Centre ground, host team Liquid Gold held solid to hold the Guyana Defence Force to a nil all stalemate.
At Uitvlugt, even the vociferous home support that Seawall received did not deter the young Buxtonians from charging to full points. Their leading striker, multi talented Clive Andries nailed their first goal on the stroke of half time (45th minute) in the ding dong affair with the home team who suffered their first defeat of the tournament.
The huge and breezy Uitvlugt ground has produced some exiting results for the home team (Seawall) but Buxton United was determined to change that situation, and that they did. The home team put themselves under pressure early in the second half when Anton Patterson received a second yellow card three minutes into the half and had to leave the pitch.
But despite the loss of Patterson, Seawall did not allow the advantage Buxton enjoyed to be that evident. Following a fruitful period of attacks, Seawall nailed the equalizer through a Delon Layne strike in the 79th minute.
Head coach of Buxton Lyndon France made some substitutions in the final 15 minutes and his winning goal came from one of these subs. A mere two minutes after he was introduced in the 83rd minute, Colwin Barnwell received the ball deep inside the Seawall half and powered his way down the left side into the box before unleashing a powerful right foot shot that beat the Sewall keeper to the far post in the 85th minute.
Barnwell’s goal effectively sealed the game for Buxton, their first win in 4 games (2 draws, 1 loss) as they move to 5 points, the same as Seawall.
Rosignol United recorded their third victory in five games turning back the challenge of City side Sunburst Camptown 2-1. Gladwin Johnson scored both goals for the victors in the 2nd and 18th minute, Reshawn Sandiford responding for Camptown in the 43rd minute.
The win for Rosignol takes them to 9 points and the top of the table pending the outcome of last evening’s matches at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. Camptown remains on 5 points as they suffered their 2nd defeat in 5 matches with one win and 2 draws.
Liquid Gold moves to 7 points with their one point from the draw with GDF at the Bartica Community Centre ground while the Army also move up by one to 4.
