Albouystown residents and other boxing buffs were treated to an exhibition of fistic fury when the third edition of the Inter-Gym Boxing Tournament staged by a group of administrators of the amateur boxing fraternity got underway at the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym Albouystown yesterday afternoon.
Five gyms competed for honours and included, Harpy Eagles (HE), Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Ricola Warriors (RW), Guyana Defense Force (GDF), and the Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG). The Harpy Eagles won the Best Gym prize while Aubrey Moore, representing Essequibo Boxing Gym, was adjudged best boxer. Edwin Richards knocked out Ryan Ali in 1:05sec of the first round and was subsequently presented with a special trophy for his sterling performance.
There were quite a few outstanding performances none more decisive than that of Richards. He squared off with Ryan Ali (HE) in the senior category. Immediately after the bell sounded to signal the start of the bout Richards rushed out and dealt Ali a wicked wallop and down he went. He arose and courageously re-entered the fray only to be met by a barrage of punches that sent him reeling. The determined Ali fell but rose and signaled an intention to resume combat. Several more haymakers landed on his head and sent him sprawling leaving the referee with no other choice but to halt the one sided contest.
Another bout of note occurred between female fighters, Amanda Charles (HE) and Natasha Ashby (RSC). Apparently the two had some old grouse to settle as from the onset they went after each other with venom. Punches reigned supreme as both boxers stood toe to toe and lashed out at each other. As the first round whittled down Charles began to seize the initiative with some telling uppercuts and straight rights.
If the first round was the smoke; the second round developed into a full blown inferno. Charles delivered several crunching blows to the head and body of Ashby that sent her reeling. Several more telling punches forced the referee to jump in and wave the bout off merely 1:25secs into the second stanza.
The other results are: U15 category: Ezekiel Accra (FYF) defeated Keevin Allicock (HE), Antoine Branch (HE) won from Sean Griffith (FYF). CADETS: Keve Allicock (HE) was too good for his gym mate, Terrence Adams. Kevin Allicock (FYF) lost to Dexter Wray (RW), Imran Khan (HE) defeated his gym mate, Devon Allicock, Marvin Ageday (FYF) was too good for Marlon Darrell (RW).
Juniors-Orlando Allicock (FYF) won from Moonchan Sankar, Gavin Bacchus (HE) defeated Anthony Mark (HE),
Females: Theresa London (HE) defeated Ansilla Norville while in the Seniors Category: Dexter Jordon (FYF) was too good for Randolph Singh (HE). Bert Braithwaite (GDF), defeated Devon Boatswain (GDF), Romeo Norville (HE) won over Dwayne David (GDF), while Romeo Norville won from Dwayne David (GDF)
