Unions, GuySuCo to reach agreement

On Friday representatives from Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) and National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) met with the management of the Guyana Sugar Corporation to discuss the way forward for workers of the Diamond Sugar plantation.

General Secretary of NAACIE, Kenneth Joseph, said that so far the talks have been favourable to the workers.

He however failed to divulge much information but added that another meeting is scheduled for this week when both parties are expected to come to a mutual agreement.

According to Joseph, a small group that will include persons from both unions and others from GuySuCo, will meet later in the week on the movement of workers from the Diamond Cultivation Plant to LBI.

In the meantime, Joseph said that the workers have gone back on the job at the Diamond Cultivation Plant. As it relates to the severance which the workers were calling for Joseph said that was discussed and it is an option which is being explored by the company.

However Joseph said the union is more interested in securing employment which is more important.

On Tuesday, more than 500 workers from the Diamond Sugar plantation began a strike to force GuySuCo officials to give them a definite answer about their fate with the corporation.

They say that their action came in the wake of reports that the estate is to be shut down.

The Diamond Sugar plantation has been earmarked as one of the estates that will be closed as part of GuySuCo’s restructuring programme.

The workers are to be re-deployed to the La Bonne Intention Sugar Estate. Some have already been sent there to work.
