At 16:00hrs today, the institution observances of its 70th anniversary with a thanksgiving Service on the school’s hard court and the Head Mistress Leticia Lake says the event is opened to all current and past students as well as their parents. Board member, Malcolm Parris, dubbed the celebrations as special as these are part of a programme that will take the school up to its 75th anniversary celebrations.
The anniversary observances continue with a special assembly on Monday followed by a Spelling Bee competition where the executives of the Guyana alumni will be present.
On October 6, an inter-house athletic championship is scheduled for the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, where seven houses will compete for top honours while on Thursday an Open Day and food sale are carded.
The open day is one of the main highlights of the anniversary activities. “All eleven departments of the school will be showcasing their various undertaking and from the look of things it’s going to be very competitive because teachers and students are working over time to win the best prize,” Ms Lake said.

Head Mistress Lake said that the school with a current population of more than 1000 students has gone through many changes for the better over the years.
Recently the institution was in the news for several delinquent unfolding that resulted in some students being expelled.
“Dealing with children from different cultural and social backgrounds and various family types, you have to become a parent, teacher, lawyer and friend and you have to exercise a lot of patience and that’s where we come in,” Ms Lake said.
She added that as a teacher in her institution one has to be strong “because students test every individual and if they find that you are a weakling they hang you, so at all times I have to be very firm. I love them all and I tell them that but I also let them know that they need to do the right thing.”
Celebrating
30 distinctions up from eight
As the school celebrates its anniversary Ms Lake said the last Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) results prove that the school still holds promise. “Our best student received 11 subjects with five grade two’s, two grade ones, two distinctions and the rest in grade three’s.”
The second best gained nine passes. In addition, most of the students were able to secure passes at five, six and seven subjects.
She reported, too, that this year the school registered thirty distinctions as opposed to eight the previous year.
School Board member Malcolm Parris of the anniversary celebrations said that many office holders in Guyana and the Caribbean as well as other parts of the world are graduates of the school.
His list includes businessman Hans Barrow, Lawyers Peter Britton and Rex McKay, Dr. Bynoe and Dr Barton Scotland among others. He also noted that the ladies have become teachers, nurses and other professionals in New York, England, Canada and the rest of the world.
