While pointing out that sexual abuse is a major public health issue in Guyana, Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said, yesterday, that it is an area that Guyana should not be hesitant about.
In commenting on the recent revelation of a tape recording between Information Liaison to President, Kwame McCoy, who is overheard soliciting sex from a 15-year-old boy identified as ‘Julius,’ Minister Ramsammy said that the administration needs to take all necessary action to protect children from sexual abuse, regardless of who is involved.
However, he noted that this particular case which involves McCoy is being made into a political issue.
“But for all those of us who can have an open mind… people who abuse children sexually, are not from one race group…they are not from one political group and not from one economic group either….So it’s rich people, poor people from all over and we need to have solidarity on this and remove it from the political realm,” Dr. Ramsammy said.
“I don’t want to get caught up in the argument of entrapment and so on, but I believe that wherever there is any evidence of sexual abuse and particularly sexual abuse of children that Guyana should be resolute in our approach and whomever is involved, we should all try to avoid politicizing it.”
The Health Minister explained that he did not listen to the tape recording and even if he did, it would not make any difference, since the matter should be dealt with by the relevant authorities.
“Whenever these things come up and wherever it leads us, we should be able to go there.”
On the issue of homosexuality, Dr. Ramsammy emphasized that adults have the choice to do what they want to in their life. Guyanese have now recognized that there are homosexuals in the country.
“Guyana should stand united on the issues of molestation and sexual abuse of children because it is unacceptable.”
On September 20, Kaieteur News broke the story about the tape recording of a conversation between a boy who identified himself as Julius from Linden, and an individual who many have identified as Information Liaison to the President, Kwame McCoy.
In this regard, many persons have expressed their concern over the revelation of the tape since McCoy is a member of the Rights of the Child Commission.
It features a conversation that is sexual in nature and captures a moment of heartbreak over a failed sexual liaison.
When Kaieteur News contacted Mr. McCoy at his home after the revelation of the tape, he refused to go on record to deny that his was one of the voices on the recording.
In this regard, Social Activist, Mark Benschop has admitted that he made the recording of the teenager called Julius and McCoy a few weeks ago after complaints were made to him by the boy’s relatives.
The call was placed from Benschop’s office to the Office of the President where McCoy works.
On the tape, a voice purportedly belonging to McCoy was heard telling Julius that sex with a man is like sex with a woman.
President Bharat Jagdeo has since said that he will be looking in to the matter.
McCoy has since applied for annual leave and has reportedly gone to Brazil.
