Advance to Wednesday’s National semi-final
On a two-paced DCC pitch with variable bounce, Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) beat Everest by 8 runs yesterday in a low scoring Demerara zone final of Neal & Massy National 40-overs cricket final to advance to Wednesday’s National semi-final.
MSC, who recovered from 43-7 to reach 155-8 off their allotted 40 overs, dismissed Everest for 147 and will now oppose Berbice runner-up Albion at Albion in the National final-four.
MSC were wobbling on the ropes at 43-7 when former National 20/20 player Orin Forde who hit a match-winning unbeaten 90 with 5 fours and 5 sixes, was joined by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Esau (17) to stage a recovery with a 77-run stand before Esau was bowled by Demerara leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves at 120-8.
National Under-19 pacer Seon Daniels, who is playing for the Rest team in the Guyana Cricket Board’s senior 4-day competition, then grabbed 3 wickets in 2 overs with Everest closing in on victory to dash the semi-final hopes of the Camp Road outfit.
Demerara 4-day fast bowler Leon Scott caused early damage for Everest and got support from former West Indies Under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan as Shemroy Barrington (1), Lennox Cush (3), Steven Jacobs (0) and Deon Ferrier (2); all with national senior team experience, departed like a stack of cards as MSC slumped to 9-4.
When Randy Lindore (10), former Guyana Under-19 captain Kwame Crosse and Damien Vantull (0) departed in quick succession, the Everest supporters were already celebrating.
However, the big hitting Forde batted with authority on the small ground and got excellent support from Esau as MSC clawed their way back into the fray.
Scott finished with 3-32 and Khan 2-15 for Everest who seemed on course for victory before Daniels who bowled an expensive solitary over with the new ball, returned for a second spell and removed former West Indies Test Opener Ryan Ramdass (22) who batted at number 8 in the order, wicketkeeper Joseph Perry (19) and Scott for a first ball duck to spark wild celebrations among the MSC fans and players.
Skipper Abilash Dookie led the Everest run-chase with a confident 53 before he was brilliantly caught at deep mid-wicket off Jacobs by Ferrier who ran all the way from long-on.
Former Guyana Under-19 opener Chris Patandin (20) also offered token resistance after Jacobs had his Demerara and West Indies Under-19 teammate Rajendra Chandrika smartly caught at short-leg by Barrington for 2 and bowled Gonsalves for 3.
After Daniels held a caught and bowled offering as Ramdass pushed at a ball which ‘held up’ after hitting the surface, the match was over 2 overs later.
Daniels finished with 3-16, Jacobs 3-30, Ferrier 2-17 and Vantull 2-25.
