The Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) does not a have the capacity to do more than four heart surgeries at a time. This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who noted that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is suffering from a severe space problem.
He explained that even though the CHI can perform more surgeries, there would not be any space for the patients.
“So even if we want to increase the number of surgeries right now, we can’t because as it is, we only have six beds in the cardiac unit. So if you do more than six surgeries, where are you going to put the people?”
As such, the Ministry of Health still financially assists organizations such as Kids First Fund, which takes children overseas for heart surgeries.
“It’s not a surgery like eye surgery that you can do 30 per day. You have got to spend hours,” Minister Ramsammy said.
He added that the CHI is however mostly focused on adult surgeries and not that of children since it is much more complicated.
“When you have such limitations, you tend to go where you can have greater success so Guyana should not think that we don’t have the need for people to go overseas anymore.”
Meanwhile, Minister Ramsammy noted that a time will come when the Health Ministry will stop considering applications for assistance for overseas treatment.
“We can say, however, that we are not going to consider your application for help because we are only going through the CHI and I can say to you that that is a policy we will adopt at some point. We are not in a position to adopt that right now because the CHI does not have the capacity.”
